History

• August 4, 1844 – This mutual company was organized under the title Mount Joy Township Mutual Fire Insurance Association.
• February 10, 1871 – The word “Company” was substituted for “Association”.
• January 10, 1944 – The name was changed to Mount Joy Mutual Insurance Company.
• December 31, 1957 – The company reinsured all business and assumed all obligations of the City Mutual Insurance Company.
• December 31, 1962 – The company reinsured all business and assumed all obligations of the Commercial Mutual Insurance Company.
• December 31, 1963 – The Windsor Mutual Insurance Company (Hamburg, PA Incorporated March 7, 1846) merged with this company. The administrative offices were moved from Mount Joy, PA to Hamburg, PA.
• December 31, 1965 – The company reinsured all business and assumed all obligations of the Allen Mutual Insurance Company
• December 28, 1966 – Financial control (80.9% later raised to 100%) of Eastern Shore of Virginia Fire Insurance Company, Inc in Keller, Virginia is aquired.
• June 30, 1969 – Farmers American Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Bucks County, Dublin, PA is absorbed by merger.
• December 19, 1975 – Towamensing Mutual Insurance Company of Aquashicola, PA is absorbed by merger.
• July 1, 1982 – The administrative offices are moved from Hamburg, PA to Ephrata, PA.
• March 31, 2009 – Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Dug Hill, MD is absorbed by merger.
• September 30, 2010 – Washington Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Lawrence County, PA is absorbed by merger.
• September 1, 2019 – Farmers & Mechanics Mutual Insurance Association of Cecil County was absorbed through merger.
